Alright.

Let's go backwards from just recently, shall we?

I watched The Watchmen tonight. It was nothing like I expected. Not at all. I can't really complain though. I've never been much into superheroes so...There was a lot of gore (Which, yeah, I laughed at...a lot)And a lot of death (again with the laughing because I am a sadistic stoner with a sick sense of humor). I had to wake my dad up a few times, when they weren't showing almost full on porn on the screen that is (which, okay, the chick that played the young Miss Jupiter? Yeah. FUCKING HOT. So that wasn't so bad either)


Last night I...

I got high. Like...that doesn't even need elaboration.
I tried to get my best friend to make out with me (with cotton mouth from the weed...um...GROSS)
I write poetry about said best friend, pertaining heavily to "The World Has It's Shine" (LAME !TERA. Because I'm a fucking sentimental sap and she's in love with someone else...I feel great)

Night Night

 

Hoy cierro un capitulo en el libro de mi vida!!!

Esta semana  ha sido llena de emociones encontradas.
El lunes me buscó mi ex novio para rogarme nuevamente que regresara con él, volvió a llorar, me abrazó, me besó y le correspondí, realmente aun lo amo, disfrute tanto estar unos minutos con él, pero no debo regresar con él, tomé una decisión de qu no iba a regresar y así lo haré. Lo amo y lo que le dije algún día de que era el amor de mi vida es cierto, adoro estar con él; el problema es que sé que no debo rgresar con él porque después como termino con esa relación que no tiene futuro. Sé que jamás en la vida podría estar a su lado, a lo mejor sí, pero no quiero vivir en el pueblo, rodeada de tierra y cerros, yo no soy de ese mundo, tal vez esté mal eso que digo, pero no puedo ni quiero. Pasé muchos momentos lindos junto a él, compartimos muchas aventuras, hicimos muchas locuras, pero también hubo muchas discusiones, lagrimas, gritos, desconfianzas, celos, etc y eso es precisamente lo que ya no debo permitir.
Le pedí que yano me buscara, que me olvidara, que me odiara, pero me dijo que le de otra oportunidad, que ahora si va a cambiar, pero no es justo que hasta ahora que vio la de a de veras ya quiere cambiar y eso a mi me molesto mucho. Me pidio que lo dejara quedarse, que domía conmigo auqnue no le hiciera caso, le dije que no más, que nunca jamás se quedaría conmigo porque me había cansado de sus desprecios, de que yo siempre era la que le rogaba, la que le suplicaba y le lloraba suplicandole que se quedara, que no se fuera y el se portaba bien mal, me rechazaba y yo me sentía muy mal, pues me cansé de eso y no estoy dispuesta a regresar a vivir ese tormento. me subí al coche y me fui, le dije que se fuera porque no iba a entrar.
Me dolio mucho ese capitulo de mi vida, pero es lo mejor y me dolio mucho porque lo quiero mucho, lo amo, me encanta, pero eso no es suficiente, ahora que he estado sin él, me he sentido super bien, me he sentido tan libre, contenta, pero no puedo evitar el extrañarlo, pensar en él, recordar nuestros buenos momentos y lo peor de todo esque hace rato dormí por la tarde y soñé con él, soñé  que estabamos como en un camino de terracería donde había cerros, y yo lo andaba abrazando  y nos besabamos y estabamos contento. Lo ves, hasta lo sueño porque lo extraño y lo extraño mucho, nos llevabamos bien, cuando estabamos contentos eramos taaaan felices, pero eso termino  y no debo extrañarlo más.
Adios Manuel, espero puedas perdonarme algún día. Te deseo lo mejor del mundo, que seas feliz, Espero que encuentres a una mujer que te aguante todos tus desplantes y berrinches.

Watchmen

That was a very loyal adaptation of the comic book, which did not improve on or shed new light on the source material. So hm.

I’m not sure how you do either of those two things when you’re talking about Watchmen. It’s pretty close to perfect. It already bears within it its own criticism and commentary — quite literally, in fact. The things that can be said about Nite Owl and Doctor Manhattan and The Comedian have been said. So it’s not like I’m posing a reasonable standard, here.

It is also undeniably a good and nearly great piece of craftsmanship. Snyder’s use of slow motion to capture the feel of comic book panels is superb; the set design likewise. He nails the feel of the graphic novel almost completely.

I think the one place where he missteps is his use of graphic violence. The movie is fairly bloody. When I went back and looked over the original again, I realized it was pretty gory too, but the impact is different on the page; the movie preserves the amount of blood and by rendering it in technicolor, enhances the impact.

This isn’t the biggest deal in the world, although I think it hampers the movie in a couple of places. E.g., when we get to the slightly altered story of how Rorschach becomes what he is, there’s an overall loss of effectiveness. What he goes through there doesn’t seem unusual compared to what we’ve seen throughout the movie.

(Parenthetically: the story was altered because Saw used the original story, I think. This is a decent reason to tweak things a bit.)

That aside, the tone is right on target. Even the expository lumps work. Thanks to some really lovely design work, the long conversation between Doctor Manhattan and Laurie Jupiter towards the end of the movie takes on a mythic feel.

Still, though, it’s not a transformative work; it’s just an elegant retelling of a story I already know very well. I guess another saving grace might have been the acting. In the hands of great actors, the story might have been imbued with more power. What we get is a couple of pretty good actors — I mean, the general standard is way above your average blockbuster — and some OK actors. But it isn’t quite enough.

I sort of felt like the casting was for looks first, and ability second, maybe? Because the appearances are spot-on. Again: Snyder really wanted to make a faithful movie, and fought hard for the right to do so, which is pretty awesome. Still and all, no matter how much Patrick Wilson looks like Nite Owl, I would have loved to have seen what a motivated John Cusack might have done with the part. Or Joaquin Phoenix? Man.

Then again, Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan deserve all the kudos they’re getting. It wasn’t award-winning work on either of their parts, but it was really solid.

I did enjoy the movie. I especially enjoyed the opening fight scene, which was a lovely portrayal of an older warrior outclassed, and I couldn’t say enough good things about the credit sequence. Come to think of it, I liked all the fight scenes: the superheroics were unrealistic in a completely reasonable way. I read them, hm, as a window into the depths of obsession reached by our protagonists. It’s a whole crew of Bruce Waynes, unhealthy natures included.

But it’s not a great movie, just a decent one. When compared to the book, the depth just isn’t there. There’s not time! Terry Gilliam decided he could only make this movie as a miniseries and I think he was right. It’s not just the lack of the pirate substory, it’s the lack of any substory. Rorschach’s psychiatrist is reduced to his direct interactions with Rorschach, and as a result he goes from being a semi-tragic figure who also serves as a counter to cynicism to a funny authority for Rorschach to mock. The story is lessened as a result; the superheroes don’t mean quite as much without Moore’s foundation of humanity.

Again, I’m setting a brutal standard here. Snyder did avoid compromise, and he did get nearly three hours of this up on the screen, and he did a good job. He might have made the best Watchmen anyone could make barring an alternate reality in which Terry Gilliam was allowed to make a ten hour movie with infinite funding. I guess I don’t think this movie needed to be made, when you get right down to it — but I also don’t think it’s a shame it was made.

Hawai'i Part 1

So this Hawaii trip has been good. I have been spending way too much money, but hey, it’s Hawaii. I’m on the island of Oahu and I have been here since Monday (March 2), so I have been here for 6 days so far and I still have 5 more day (March 12).

So far (in order) I have seen:

I have been top the beach of Waikiki once but I am planning to go 3 more times but we’ll see how things go. I have do most of my shopping but I still need to get something for my mom and uncle. Cristin is good; she gets on my nerves I get on hers; it’s how it usually is. I hate the weather; it’s been overcast the whole time here, rainy and humid. It’s very warm and all I need is a light jacket but it really sucks when it’s raining and you’re sweating at the same time….I’ll write later…..

cupcake madness!

 

We have enjoyed many wonderful days at girlfriends but this has been one of the best ever!  We have laughed until tears ran down our cheeks, created whimsies from the beautiful flotsum and jetsum throughout the shop and bonded again with our girlfriends.

Jeni took these beautiful photos of the shop and our cupcakes.  Now like all things girlfriends I am sharing them with you!  All the cupcakes were delicious - some were delicious to taste and others were delicious bits of whimsy created by the girlfriends who joined us.  What a delightful day!

Respect

'Respect voor eigen lijf', minstens zes van de circa 70.000 Haarlemse vrouwen hebben het volgens mijn laatste telling- of dragen een nieuw- ontworpen T-shirt waarop staat dat ze het hebben. En dat is goed nieuws aan de vooravond van Internationale Vrouwendag, althans volgens een van de drie initiatiefneemsters voor het ontwerp, de Heilige Axiemaagd Mara van Limbeek (tot het schisma in de Axiepartij onafscheidelijk van Kraker Sjaak Vrugt).

Grote Broer het HD vindt het roze T-shirt belangwekkend genoeg voor een plekje op de voorpagina en op de stadspagina heeft Richard Stekelenburg nog eens drie H'lemse vrouwen weten te ronselen die respect voor eigen lijf hebben (de vierde in de fotoserie is Dolly Bellefleur - onbegrijplijk dat Richard daar met zijn ervaring is ingetuind) en die de boodschap willen uitdragen dat vrouwen mooi zijn zoals ze zijn (dus ook de lelijke, RaDa-reda) en trots moeten zijn op zichzelf.

Deze benadering komt mij uiterst ongelegen, beste Raarlemmers. Trouwe lezers weten dat de respectkraan (warm en koud stromend) hier bij het RaDa dagelijks wijd open staat: mens (m/v; hetero/homo; goed/crimineel; jong/ bejaard; ziek, zwak, misselijk; met/zonder T-shirt; vegetariכr/carnivoor), dier (carnivoor/herbivoor), de natuur (zuidelijk en noordelijk halfrond), meubilair (van licht grenen tot donker eiken)...niks of niemand hoeft hier respect te ontberen.

Maar uitgerekend vandaag (op de dag dat Mara en ontwerpster Tessel Dekker en Dolly e.a. de aandacht vestigen op hun collectieve mooizijnzoalszezijn) is daar meerkampster Jolanda Keizer. Een stadgenote, stadgenoten, en tweede bij de EK in Turijn!

Toen ik lang geleden mijn rondjes dieselde bij AV Haarlem, had ik veel ontzag (zoals respect toen nog heette) voor alle trainende lijven op het tartan. Voor de opgevoerde, exhibitionistische sprinters, iele middenafstandlopers, slungelige hoogspringers. Maar atletisch gezien waren de meerkampers en -kampsters superieur. In proportie. All round.

En nu hebben wij Jolanda Keizer. 23 jaar pas, nog lang niet aan haar top. Wat een wijf! Wat een lijf! 60 meter horden (8,66 sec.), kogelstoten (15, 46m), verspringen (6,20m), hoogspringen (1,83m), 800 meter (2,18 min.). Haar verrichtingen staan hier op YouTube en ze heeft een homepage met prachtige foto's.

Vandaag gaat al mijn beschikbare respect naar haar, en morgen zien we wel weer. Kun je ermee leven, Mara, voor ייn dagje?

Experiments have shown that lowering people’s serotonin levels doesn’t in perpetuity lower mood, nor does it worsen symptoms in people who are already depressed. And while antidepressants raise serotonin levels within hours, it takes weeks before medication kicks in to relieve depression. If depression were due to low serotonin, there wouldn’t be an antidepressant medication lag.

Ever since I got together with Nic,
the weight just continued going uphill.
My favourite black t shirt that read, "Cool down!! I'm not that hot!" used to fit me when I first got together with Nic, and now?! IT CAN'T EVEN FIT ME PLEASE!

My denim shorts used to be loose,
that I could never go out in them without wearing a belt.
Maybe I should tell Nic,
"Let's break off so that I can lose weight!"

He'll probably die, and so will I.
He's not helping in controlling my diet ):
I should start going vegetarian during lunchtime,
and carb-less at night.

I'm hoping to be slimmer than the the 2007 by end of the year,
but I doubt I'd be able to.
Anyhow, I've got a seriously bad throat,
really killing me.

Alright, time to have a nice bath, and then hit the sacks.
